I say life is a flower, and design is the only seed.
At a young age, I was exposed to the fascinating field of painting due to the subtle influence of my uncle, who dedicated his heart to fine arts education at China Central Academy of Fine Arts as a professor, or to some extent, the very first enlightenment toward my beloved field dawning on me. Therefore, I learned some basic knowledge and skills on painting from him, which allowed me to generate great interests in art and laid a foundation for my study in graphic design.
With two decades passing, I chose the specialty with regard to Art Design as my university intention with no second wasting after the College Entrance Examination. Four-year professional pursuit in my Alma Mater (North China University of Technology) taught me a lot on theoretical and practical learning, such as Chinese and foreign modern art history, drawing, hand painting skills, traditional Chinese paintings skills, logo design, packaging design, advertisement design, and related graphic design software. I was deeply impressed by the design of iPhone 1 in 2007 when I was in university, which was the key factor for me to get involved in design via full use of what I have learnt. I would immerse in all kinds of fashionable exterior design and innovative user-interface designs at first sight, of course, the creator of iPhone, Steve Jobs was included. In my opinion, the most important thing for design is to innovate, think ahead of others and make an accurate adjustment. It is no doubt that Steve Jobs has these qualities. I began to obsess with learning to. It was the stories of my idol that aroused my desire to start a career in relevant companies. When it comes to the working years I shared, I never thought that my job would bring me great change to my cognition of previous research. The experiences in art exhibition design for invitation, poster, postcard and painting album, and brand vision design like logo and VI, and the communication with those expert peers were just like keys to ignition for me to follow up with all the time, while the limited access to fulfill the essential requirements of being an experienced designer in my three former corporations overshadowed my dream about an easily successful in the near future. The essence of graphic design is recognizing the world in which we live, finding out the problems in our life and solving them through characters and pictures, to make our life better. Gradually, the seed of an overseas refinement sprouted in my heart.
Since Graphic Design is a major of leading edge, the ability of foresight to artistic ideas and emerging works gains its priority. It is necessary to keep a perfect balance on both artistic attainment and speculative knowledge, thus the United States becomes my best bet. I hope my following learning in George Mason University will be a proper bridge to have a taste of the pure western education methodology. The Master of Arts in Graphic Design from George Mason University offers students a comprehensive study and preparation for the graphic design profession. The program calls for 36 credits, which includes courses in typography, web design, image making, and brand design. I hope that this program will develop my critical thinking ability, and enable me to conduct my experiments. According to my life plan, friendship with students from all parts of the world will also be established during my postgraduate in a totally strange environment. I am a goal-oriented person. The development of China’s design affairs in an incredible high speed once led to shortage of talent resources in frontier domain, which was also a calling for me to cherish my further education with new possibilities to broaden my horizon in the range of innovation and communication. I believed that my three-year topping up of knowledge bank through diverse social contacts will leave me great impact on academic acquirement. After my returning to homeland, I will open my own graphic design company, or in other words, my long term goal begins.
Seeking for the true essence is always fascinating. It is my life of inspiration that set me free from the traditional painting arts of black and white. I have been riding in fences for so long, so it is time to stop imitating. Since I cannot get over my initiate love of graphic design, every day is another chance for me to refine my enthusiasm on it, and the learning journey with a clash of cultures will not let me down.
